Quartz Sand Filter Media for Water Treatment: Performance, Principles and Industry Standards

Jun. 13, 2026

Quartz sand filter media serve as the fundamental and core filter material in water treatment processes, widely applied in domestic water purification, industrial pure water production, advanced wastewater treatment and other scenarios. Boasting stable performance, strong pollutant interception capacity and long service life, they are an indispensable type of filter media in the water treatment industry. This article systematically sorts out the basic properties, core advantages, water purification working principles and technical parameters conforming to industry standards of quartz sand filter media.

Ⅰ. Basic Introduction to Quartz Sand Filter Media

Quartz sand filter media are refined from natural quartz ore through multiple processes including crushing, primary screening, water washing, drying and secondary fine screening, serving as dedicated filter materials for water treatment. Its main component is silicon dioxide, with trace amounts of iron oxide, clay and organic impurities.

Finely processed quartz sand appears white, with polyhedral and nearly spherical particles. It features high hardness, high density, great mechanical strength and strong corrosion resistance, suitable for domestic water purification and various chemical water treatment applications.

Ⅱ. Core Advantages of Quartz Sand Filter Media

Quartz sand filter media fit most water treatment working conditions with excellent practicality and compatibility. Its core strengths are reflected in the following four aspects:

1.Stable performance and superior adaptability

Quartz sand boasts stable chemical properties, acid and alkali resistance, and corrosion resistance. It does not undergo chemical reactions during water treatment, releases no toxic or harmful substances, and poses no risk of secondary water pollution. It is applicable to filtration of domestic water and all types of industrial water.

2.Powerful pollutant interception and excellent filtration effect

Its special polyhedral, nearly spherical particle structure provides a large specific surface area and well-proportioned pore structure. It can effectively trap solid impurities such as suspended solids, colloids and sediment in water, reduce water turbidity, and deliver consistent and long-lasting filtration performance.

3.High mechanical strength and ultra-long service life

This filter medium features high mechanical strength, good scouring resistance and wear resistance. It is not prone to breakage, deformation or pulverization under long-term water flow impact and repeated backwashing, extending its service cycle and effectively cutting equipment operation & maintenance and media replacement costs.

4.Safe and reliable for drinking water treatment

Qualified quartz sand filter media contain no harmful substances like soil, mica or organic contaminants. Its water leachate is non-toxic and harmless, complying with relevant standards for domestic drinking water treatment, so it can be safely used in civilian water purification projects.

Ⅲ. Water Purification Working Principle of Quartz Sand Filter Media

Quartz sand filtration is not a simple physical sieving process. It mainly relies on the synergistic effect of two mechanisms: particle migration and adsorption adhesion to remove fine impurities in water, which can be divided into two specific stages:

Stage 1: Migration of suspended particles

When water flows through the filter bed, turbidity particles such as suspended solids and colloids separate from the water flow streamline under mechanical forces including sedimentation, inertia, interception and diffusion, and gradually migrate toward the surface of quartz sand grains. The force applied to particles varies according to their particle sizes.

Stage 2: Adsorption and adhesion of particles

After impurity particles make full contact with the quartz sand surface, they stably adhere to the filter medium surface under the combined action of Van der Waals force, surface tension and Coulomb force. This achieves effective separation of impurities from water to fulfill the purpose of water purification and filtration.

The specific surface area of filter media is a core index determining filtration efficiency. The larger the effective adsorption surface area of filter sand, the stronger its adhesion capacity for suspended solids in water, and the more stable the quality of effluent water. This explains why high-quality quartz sand requires uniform particle size and intact angular edges.

Ⅳ. Industry Technical Standards for Quartz Sand Filter Media

There are clear implemented industry standards for quartz sand filter media applied in water treatment. All filter media put into service shall meet the following core technical indicators:

1.Abrasion and crushing resistance: The sum of crushing rate and abrasion rate ≤1.5%, ensuring no breakage or pulverization during long-term operation.

2.Qualified density: The density of conventional filter media ≥2.55g/cm³ (excluding special working conditions) with compact structure and rational pores.

3.Strict impurity control: Free of soil, mica and organic impurities, and non-toxic water leachate; mud content ≤1%, light impurity content (density <2g/cm³) ≤0.2%.

4.Stable chemical composition: Loss on ignition ≤0.7%, indicating extremely low organic matter content.

5.Strong dissolution resistance: Hydrochloric acid solubility rate ≤3.5%, preventing impurity dissolution under acidic and alkaline conditions.

6.Particle size matched to application scenarios: Particle size of 0.5~1.2 mm for single-layer and double-layer filter tanks; particle size of 0.5~0.8 mm for three-layer filter media tanks.

7.Uniform particle size: Particles smaller than the lower limit size ≤3%, particles larger than the upper limit size ≤2%, to guarantee uniform filtration performance.

8.Standard particle size coefficients: The effective size and uniformity coefficient of filter media shall comply with industry specifications to fit the operation requirements of various filtering equipment.

Ⅴ. Main Application Scenarios

With reliable filtration performance and wide adaptability, quartz sand filter media are widely used in various water treatment equipment and process systems. The main application scenarios are listed as follows:

· Filtration and purification of domestic drinking water for municipal projects and residential communities

· Special filter material for single-layer, double-layer rapid filter tanks and three-layer filter media tanks

· Supporting base layers and pre-filtration layers for industrial high-purity water treatment

· Matching filter media for various filters and ion exchange equipment

· Industrial circulating water, advanced filtration of wastewater, swimming pool water circulation purification and other applications

Ⅵ. Conclusion

Quartz sand filter media possess multiple advantages including safety, stable performance, cost-effectiveness and high practicality. Featuring mature production processes and standardized technical indicators, they can satisfy the demands of both domestic drinking water purification and high-precision industrial water treatment.

As the foundational core filter medium in water treatment systems, qualified quartz sand ensures stable operation of filtering equipment and long-term water purification. It effectively boosts water treatment efficiency and cuts operation and maintenance costs, serving as an essential foundational material for all kinds of water purification projects.
